Since that time, the club, as like most other football clubs, have had good times and not so good times, the highlights of which were winning the 61-62 First Division Championship in their first season in the top flight, winning the FA Cup in 1978 and winning the UEFA cup in 1981.

The club were relegated to the Second Division in 1986 and have since enjoyed 2 promotions and unfortunately endured another 2 relegations, the team enjoyed a great season in the Premiership 2001/2001 finishing fifth and qualifying for a UEFA cup spot, sadly the year after Town finished 3rd from bottom and returned to the First Division (Championship).
Marcus Evans has injected some welcome cash into the club and after a mediocre 2008/2009 season, manager Jim Magilton was shown the door and Roy Keane has taken over. The start of the 2009/2010 season has seen town win just once in all competitions up until December.
